DnD Miniatures Player Characters: Tiefling, Dragonborn, Tabaxi and More

Your player character is the one model you'll push around the table every single session, so it's worth getting right. If you're hunting for DnD miniatures player characters that actually match the species on your character sheet, a tiefling with horns and a tail, a dragonborn with a proper snout, a tabaxi with whiskers, the generic "human fighter" in a starter box won't cut it. Here's where we'd start, species by species, using ranges we print to order in the UK.

One quick note on wording. The 2024 Player's Handbook swapped the word "race" for "species", but most players (and most search boxes) still say race, so we use both here.

Why pick DnD miniatures player characters by species?

Because the species is the first thing anyone reads off your mini. Class gear can be fudged: a sword-and-board figure works as a fighter, paladin or a cleric with a bit of paint. Horns, scales, fur and a tail can't be painted on. Start with the species, then pick the pose that suits your class. If you've already got the species sorted and want help with the class side, our guide to the best miniatures for every D&D class covers that half of the job.

Most player characters are Medium or Small creatures, so they sit on the common 25mm (one-inch) base. Our D&D miniatures size guide explains scales and base sizes if you're mixing figures from different designers.

Tieflings and dragonborn

Tieflings. Galaad Miniatures' Tiefling set gives you armoured knights, a paladin and a wizard, all with the horns and tails that make the species readable at a glance. We went through every figure in our DnD miniatures tiefling deep-dive, so head there for the detail. You can find more of the designer's work on Galaad's MyMiniFactory page.

Dragonborn. Artisan Guild has two draconic ranges. The Dragonguard (individual figures from £6.49) is a band of draconian warriors that suits a dragonborn fighter or paladin nicely, and the larger Draconian Scourge set gives you more poses to choose from. Our older Dragonguard post walks through that range.

Tabaxi, kobolds and warforged

Tabaxi. We stock two cat-folk ranges. Bite the Bullet's Tabaxi full set leans heroic and adventurous. Printed Obsession's Tabaxi Caravan (from £5.99) has a travelling-merchant feel, which is handy if your tabaxi is more rogue or bard than front-liner. There's a full write-up in our Tabaxi Caravan post.

Kobolds. Small, scrappy and surprisingly popular as player characters. Bite the Bullet's Kobold set (from £6.49) is the obvious pick, and we covered their newer kobold release in our DnD kobold miniatures post. Galaad's Succubi, Myconids and Kobold set adds a few more.

Warforged. Warforged come from the Eberron setting rather than the core books, so they're rarer on shelves. Bite the Bullet's Warforged set (from £6.49) is built for exactly this. If you want something chunkier, Artisan Guild's Golem Simulacra constructs make good stand-ins.

Halflings, gnomes, drow and other species

The smaller folk are well covered. Bite the Bullet's Halfling set and Artisan Guild's Gnomes of Golemmar give you plenty of Small-sized heroes. For a drow, PS Miniatures' Drow Legionnaires (from £6.49) are a solid martial option.

A few more worth a look if someone at your table has gone off the beaten track: Artisan Guild's Goldmaw Lizards for lizardfolk, Bite the Bullet's Tortles Vol 2 for tortles, and their Owlfolk for bird-folk characters. You'll find a lot more in the full Bite the Bullet and Artisan Guild collections. Bite the Bullet release a themed set every month, and their back catalogue is on their MyMiniFactory profile.

Can't find your species at all? Browse the fantasy range first. There are close to 4,000 products in there, so someone has usually sculpted it.

Frequently asked questions

What base size do player character miniatures use?

Most player characters are Medium or Small, and both normally go on a 25mm (one-inch) base, one square on a standard 5-foot grid. That's the common convention rather than a hard rule, so check with your DM if your table does things differently.

Are these official D&D miniatures?

No. They're licensed 3D-printed designs from independent sculptors, printed by us in the UK. They aren't official Wizards of the Coast or WizKids products, but they work at any D&D table.

Do the miniatures come painted?

No, they arrive as unpainted resin, ready for you to prime and paint. If you're new to the brush, our beginner's guide to painting resin miniatures is a good place to start.

Can I mix figures from different designers in one party?

Yes. Designers sculpt at slightly different heroic scales, so check the scale options on each product page and our size guide, but a party drawn from two or three designers usually looks fine side by side once it's painted and based the same way.
