Fantasy Troll Miniatures: Artisan Guild's Svartwood Trolls Range

Fantasy troll miniatures have a way of anchoring a tabletop battle. Whether they're lumbering across a dungeon tile or looming over a forest encounter, a well-painted troll makes players sit up. Artisan Guild's Svartwood Trolls range gives you some of the best 3D-printed options around, from a hulking troll king to a sinister elder and a spectral hag. We carry the full range at TabletopXtra, printed to order in the UK.

About Artisan Guild

Andrea Tarabella built Artisan Guild as a solo sculpting studio, and the Svartwood Trolls range shows what that focus produces. Every model in this set uses his signature ball-joint system, which means arms, heads and weapons can be swapped between figures across different Artisan Guild releases. If you already own other models from the studio, you can mix parts to build trolls that look genuinely unique at your table.

Each of Artisan Guild's monthly releases feeds into the same modular system, which means your Svartwood Trolls can share components with anything else in their catalogue. It's a practical approach for players who like to build varied warbands from a single studio.

The Svartwood setting draws on Norse folklore. 'Svart' means black in Old Norse, and the figures carry that dark-forest character through craggy skin textures, heavy frames, and faces that look like they've been carved from bark and stone. These are trolls you'd actually be nervous to encounter in a game.

What's in the Svartwood Trolls range

The Svartwood Trolls Miniatures Full Set is the best starting point if you want the complete warband. At £129.99, it brings together all the key figures and named characters in one purchase. That works out considerably cheaper than buying them individually, and as a print-on-demand order from TabletopXtra, the figures ship to your door ready for basing and painting.

For players who want specific models, the individual options are strong. The Svartwood Troll Hag and Svartwood Troll Hunter are Small Sets at £12.99 each. The Troll Hag is a hunched, wizened figure with a slightly spectral quality that works well for a night hag, green hag, or simply an ancient creature with too much history behind it.

The named characters are where the range gets interesting.

Drungvandel the Troll King at £26.99 is the centrepiece of the warband. He's a large figure built to dominate a 50mm or 60mm base, with an imposing silhouette that reads clearly from across the table. If you're running a troll lair encounter in D&D 5e or want a strong creature focal point for your warband, this is the model.

Gammelgren the Elder at £16.99 offers something different. Where the king is brute force, Gammelgren suggests accumulated age. An elder troll has real atmospheric value in a darker campaign, and he'd sit well in a terrain piece or diorama if you want something more considered than a standard base.

The Giant Svart Troll at £28.99 is the largest single figure in the set, sized for a 60mm or larger base. In game terms this is your troll giant or cave troll stat block. The skin texture detail is particularly sharp at this scale.

Fantasy troll miniatures: painting ideas

Svartwood Trolls reward dark colour schemes. A grey-green base skin with blue-black shadows in the recesses brings out the texture in the sculpts. Adding mossy greens into the deep folds and under the arms ties the models together as a group and reads well from across the table.

For Drungvandel's armour pieces, rust-streaked iron works better than polished metal. These are trolls that have been around a long time. The king shouldn't look like he just came from the armoury.

Basing on dark stone or forest floor works naturally with this range. Autumnal leaf scatter fits a late-season setting and carries well in lower-light gaming conditions.

If you're painting the full warband, batching works well here. Prime them dark grey, block in the skin tones as a group, then work through the armour and basing materials together. The models are distinct enough in silhouette that batch painting doesn't make them look samey.

Add the Svartwood Trolls to your collection

All Svartwood Trolls products are printed to order at TabletopXtra. Pick up the Full Set for the complete warband, or start with Drungvandel the Troll King as a centrepiece and build from there. Artisan Guild's monthly releases all use the same ball-joint connector system, so Svartwood Troll bodies can take heads or weapons from other ranges entirely. Explore the full Artisan Guild catalogue on their official site to see how the modular system works across their other releases.
