Oni Assault by Gaz Minis: Japanese Oni Miniatures for D&D and Pathfinder

Oni demons are a staple of Japanese mythology for good reason. Hulking, horned, and very hard to kill, they're exactly the kind of villain that makes a mid-campaign encounter memorable. The Oni Assault range from Gaz Minis brings four of them to 28/32mm resin, with enough variety between the characters to build a genuine warband rather than four copies of the same sculpt.

What's in the Oni Assault Set

Four figures make up the range, each covering a distinct role. They're sold as a bundle or individually as pose packs, depending on whether you want the full group or specific characters.

The Akuma Clan Leader is the one you notice first. Akuma is the Japanese word for demon or devil, and the sculpt earns that name: larger than the rest, built like a warlord, not a foot soldier. Whether you need an encounter boss or a warband chief, he does that job without any conversion work.

The Kishima Oni Clan Women form the fighting core. Female Oni warriors with a shared aesthetic, they read as a unit rather than a loose collection of individual sculpts. Running them as a patrol or advance guard before the players reach the Akuma Clan Leader hands you a ready-made encounter structure with no additional setup.

The Fuji Fan Weilder is the most unusual figure of the four. Carrying a battle fan rather than a weapon shifts the character's role away from straight combat. This is someone with a different function in the warband: a commander, a shaman, or a more cerebral threat. The sculpt plays that up.

The Kazur Oni Spyre Hunter is the solo operative of the group. Where the Clan Leader is imposing and the Clan Women are a unit, the Spyre Hunter moves ahead of the others. The build is leaner and more predatory than the rest of the set.

Where These Figures Fit at the Table

D&D 5e. Oni sit at Challenge Rating 7 in the Monster Manual, putting them in the mid-campaign range. The set gives you a natural encounter structure already: the Kishima Oni Clan Women as a forward patrol, the Kazur Oni Spyre Hunter as a scout who disappears before the players work out what they're dealing with, and the Akuma Clan Leader as the boss at the end. Four figures, one arc.

Pathfinder. Oni in Pathfinder are fiends drawing directly from East Asian mythology, so any campaign with that flavour has an obvious use for the group. The Fuji Fan Weilder works particularly well here as a higher-intelligence type: something with spell-like abilities or a tactical role rather than a straightforward attacker.

Fantasy skirmish. In narrative or warband games, the four characters cover the basics: a chief, a fighting unit, an infiltrator, and a wild card in the Fan Weilder. If you're assembling a small homebrew warband and want a coherent theme, this set covers that from the box.

Painting the Oni Assault Range

The classic Oni palette from Japanese art gives you a strong foundation: vivid red, blue, or green skin with heavy shading. Deep crimson basecoat, orange-to-yellow highlights on the raised muscles, brass or lacquered armour details. Done well it reads across the table from a distance, which matters if you're actually playing with these rather than just displaying them.

For a darker treatment, blue-black skin with purple shading and tarnished gold armour shifts the feel away from mythological demon and toward something more like a supernatural assassin. That palette suits the Kazur Oni Spyre Hunter in particular.

The Akuma Clan Leader is worth spending extra time on. He's the most detailed figure in the set, and his armour and weapon work rewards layering. If you're painting the Kishima Oni Clan Women as a squad, keeping their skin tones consistent while changing the accent colours on clothing or armour stops them reading as identical at arm's length.
