Best Grimdark Miniatures UK (and What 'Grimdark' Actually Means)
Grimdark miniatures are figures built for settings where nobody is a clean-cut hero: armoured zealots, plague-ridden pilgrims, mutated soldiers and the miserable civilians stuck in between. We stock hundreds of them, most in 28mm and 32mm for wargaming and skirmish games, so here is what the word actually means, how it differs from plain dark fantasy, and which ranges we'd point you to first.
What is grimdark fantasy?
Grimdark is fiction set in a brutal, morally grey world where violence is routine and things rarely end well. The word itself comes from the tagline of Warhammer 40,000: "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war." Over time it stuck to books, games and art with the same bleak tone.
On the tabletop that tone shows up in the sculpts. You get gothic armour covered in skulls and scripture, gas masks, barbed wire, rotting flesh and religious iconography pushed to the point of madness. Factions tend to be "less bad" rather than good, which is a big part of the appeal for painters who like a lot of grime and weathering.
Grimdark vs dark fantasy: what's the difference?
Dark fantasy is fantasy with horror mixed in, while grimdark is about a hopeless, cynical world where even the protagonists do terrible things. The two overlap a lot. A vampire count stalking a village is dark fantasy. A starving army of penitents marching into a trench war they can't win, led by priests who know it, is grimdark.
For buying miniatures the line doesn't matter much. If you want gothic horror for a D&D campaign, our posts on Artisan Guild's Soulless Vampires and Galaad's Vampire Court cover that side. The grimdark fantasy miniatures, WW1 warbands and sci-fi armies below lean fully grim.
The best grimdark miniatures we stock in the UK
We've split our picks by flavour, because "grimdark" covers trench warfare, far-future crusades and the people living in the ruins.
Grimdark WW1 miniatures
Most of this corner of the hobby revolves around Trench Crusade and its WW1-style war against the forces of Hell. Our Trench Grimdark collection holds over 200 products made as compatible alternatives (not official Trench Crusade models).
- Wraith Pilgrims from Crab Miniatures' Doomed Battalions range, from £5.99.
- Anchored Shrine from the Bleeding Procession by Bite the Bullet x Ashen Armies, from £16.99, a proper centrepiece for a zealot warband.
- Ammunition Monk (from £9.99) and the Goety Warlock from the Hellbound Apostasy (from £15.99) if you'd rather play the heretics.
Not sure where to start with the game itself? Our Trench Crusade explainer and guide to where to buy Trench Crusade models go into more detail.
Grimdark sci-fi miniatures
For far-future armies, DakkaDakka is our biggest range by a distance. The Fire Lizards sit under the Battle Brothers line and include infantry like the Volcano Armor Squad (from £18.99) right up to tanks and APCs. The Greater Good line, such as the Shadow Combat Suits (from £19.99), gives you battlesuits instead of power armour.
If you already own an army and want to make it look worse for wear, Grey Tide Studio's resin bits are the easy route. The Eternal Crusaders Shoulder Pads Pack 1 is £8.99, and our conversion bits guide explains how to mix them in.
Grimdark citizens for skirmish and RPGs
Grimdark worlds need people for the soldiers to trample. Across the Realms' Grimdark Citizens range fills that gap, with sets like the Factory Worker, Street Dealer and Grimdark Nun, each from £6.49. They work as objectives, bystanders or NPCs, and they suit an underhive table too (see our Necromunda proxies post). The rest of the designer's catalogue is in the Across the Realms collection.
Painting grimdark miniatures without overthinking it
Grimdark is forgiving to paint. Muted colours, rust, mud and heavy washes do most of the work, and small mistakes read as battle damage. A dark undercoat followed by a zenithal spray of grey or bone gets you most of the way before a brush touches the model. Our guides to prepping and priming 3D-printed resin minis and painting resin miniatures cover the basics if you're new to resin.
Frequently asked questions
What is grimdark fantasy?
It's fiction set in a violent, morally grey world with little hope or heroism. The name comes from Warhammer 40,000's tagline about the "grim darkness of the far future".
What's the difference between grimdark and dark fantasy?
Dark fantasy adds horror to fantasy. Grimdark is defined by a bleak, cynical tone where even the protagonists are compromised. Plenty of settings are both.
Is Warhammer Fantasy grimdark?
Most players would say yes. Its world is grim and perilous, and it shares the tone that gave the term its name, though the word itself came from its sci-fi sibling, 40K.
What scale are grimdark miniatures?
Most of the grimdark ranges we stock are listed for 28mm and 32mm tabletop games. Each product page states its scale, and our miniature size guide explains the difference.
Can I use 3D-printed grimdark miniatures in Trench Crusade or Warhammer games?
In casual games, almost always, as long as your opponent knows what each model represents. Tournament policies vary by organiser, so check the event pack first. Our guide to Warhammer proxies covers this in more depth.
