RLM 72 is a specialist's colour — one half of the two-tone green splinter scheme the Luftwaffe reserved for maritime aircraft, from flying boats like the Dornier Do 18 and Do 24 to reconnaissance seaplanes like the Arado Ar 196. If you're building anything that spent its working life over water, this is one of the two greens you need.

Best for

• Upper-surface splinter camouflage on Luftwaffe seaplanes and coastal patrol aircraft
• Pairing with RLM 73 for the authentic two-green maritime scheme, over an RLM 65 underside
• Weathering studies where salt staining and fading break up the pattern

It's a fairly niche shade outside naval aviation subjects, which makes it worth having in stock rather than hunting one down mid-build.
